Review – February 2025 – Powerful Winter Storm at Mid-Month
The month of February 2025 was characterized by several minor storms at the beginning of the month followed by a major storm in the middle. February 2025 weather at Greg’s Weather Center was a bit like Seattle with many days of measurable precipitation, but not much rainfall. The storm of February 15-17 was one of the most significant on record at GWC with snowfall on February 15th followed by high winds and record low pressure on February 16th.

Rainfall – February 2025
February 2025 was more like a month in Seattle than in South Plainfield, NJ in terms of rainfall. While there was measurable rainfall on more than half the days of the month, the total for the month was relatively small. The wettest period of the month was on February 6-16 when some form of precipitation occurred on 9 of the 10 days and accounted for 93 percent of the month’s rainfall. There were 6 days of at least a tenth of an inch of rain. The most significant rain events were on February 13th (0.46 of an inch), February 16th (0.29 of an inch), February 6th (0.27 of an inch), and February 10th (0.20 of an inch).

Wind – February 2025
Winds were not as gusty as they would be in March 2025, but there were moments. Nearly a third of the month had days with wind gusts of at least 15 miles per hour at Greg’s Weather Center. The maximum wind gust of 21 miles per hour occurred during one of the biggest storms of the season on February 16-17. The winds would also pick up again as the month ended.


Temperature – February 2025

A warm-up developed over the final six days of the month. The high temperature rose from 46 on February 23rd to 59 on February 25th. The average high temperature from February 24th to February 28th was 54 degrees. The lowest temperature of the month occurred on February 19th at 6:18 AM with a morning low of 15.
The warmest day of the month was on February 25th with a high of 59 at 3:13 PM. There were 22 days where the low temperature for the day was below freezing with six of those days at or below 20 degrees. In addition, there four occasions, the high temperature was at or blow freezing. Conversely, there were 13 days where the high temperature of the day was above 40.
The average high for the month was 40 degrees while the average low was 26. The average temperature for February 2025 was 33 degrees. Looking at the diurnal temperature range, the average for the month was 14 degrees.

Pressure – February 2025
The average barometric pressure for the month was 29.95 inches of Hg, or 1012 millibars at GWC. The lowest pressure was 28.97 inches or 981 millibars on February 16th while the highest was 30.56 inches or 1028 millibars on February 2nd. The intense storm on February 16-17 was a bomb cyclone that produced a pressure fall of 1.57 inches or 52 millibars over 46 hours. A rate of fall of approximately 1.13 millibars per hour.
The storm of February 16-17, 2025 tied for 9th all-time in terms of intensity at Greg’s Weather Center in South Plainfield, NJ. The storm tied the nor’easters/winter storms of March 8th and April 3rd of 2005. It ranks slightly stronger than the nor’easter at the beginning of May 2023.
