Review – January 2025 – Two Snowstorms Highlight Month

The month of January 2025 was a mostly dry month highlighted by the first two snowstorms of the year on January 6th and January 19th.   There was only a total of 0.46 of an inch of precipitation for the entire month. The uncharacteristically dry January 2025 marked a continuation of the mostly arid conditions that characterized much of 2024.

Rainfall – January 2025


January 2025 was an uncharacteristically dry and quiet month from a precipitation perspective.  While there was measurable rainfall on 13 days of the month, the total for the first month of 2025 was less than half an inch.  The wettest period of the month was on January 19-20 when several inches of snow fell in South Plainfield.  There were only two days of at least a tenth of an inch of rain.  The most significant rain events were on January 19-20 (0.17 of an inch) and January 31st (0.14 of an inch).

Wind – January 2025


While the winds were mostly calm, they did have their moments in January 2025. Nineteen days of the month had a wind gust of at least 10 miles per hour. Of those 19 days, there were six days with gusts above 15 mph. The most turbulent portion of the month in terms of wind was during January 7-11.

Temperature – January 2025

Temperature Extremes - January 2025

The lowest temperature of the month occurred on January 22nd at 7:29 AM with a morning low of only 2.  The warmest day of the month was on January 29th with a high of 50 at 12:54 PM. 

There were 30 days where the low temperature for the day was below freezing with ten of those days at or below 20 degrees, and six consecutive days with lows below 10.  The lowest maximum temperature occurred on both January 21st and 22nd.

In addition, there were ten occasions when the high temperature was at or below freezing.  Conversely, there were 10 days when the high temperature of the day was 40 degrees or higher.

The average high for the month was 35 degrees while the average low was 20.  The average temperature for January 2025 was 28 degrees.   Looking at the diurnal temperature range, the average for the month was 15 degrees.

Pressure – January 2025

The average barometric pressure for the month was 29.87 inches of Hg, or 1011 millibars at GWC.  The lowest pressure was 29.53 inches or 1000 millibars on January 29th while the highest was 30.47 inches or 1032 millibars on January 21st.  The most significant pressure drop was from January 25-29 when the barometer fell 0.73 of an inch or a little more than 24 millibars.

The two significant weather events of January 2025 occurred on January 6th and 19th. On the sixth, the first snowstorm of the year developed which prompted warnings to be issued. Then, a second winter storm brought another significant snowfall of the year from the afternoon of the 19th to the early morning of the 20th, which prompted the cancellation of several high school basketball games on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
