Review – March 2025 Came in Like a Lion and Remained a Lion

The month of March 2025 was a stormy one at Greg’s Weather Center.   March 2025 came in like a lion and remained a lion for the most part.  After a relatively dry start to the year, there was 4.60 inches of rain during the month.  Much of the rainfall resulted from four significant storms at GWC over the period.

Rainfall – March 2025

March 2025 was the wettest month of the year to date.  The monthly total accounted for nearly two-thirds of all the rainfall thus far in 2025.  The wettest period of the month was on March 4-5 when 1.50 inches of rain fell.  There was measurable rain on 11 of the 31 days during the month.  Of those 11 days, there was five with rainfall over a tenth of an inch.  The most significant rain events were on March 4-5 (1.50 inches), March 16-17 (0.80 of an inch), and March 31st (0.98 of an inch).

Wind – March 2025

In addition to the rain, there was a lot of wind at GWC.  The first day of the month had a maximum wind gust of 21 miles per hour.  There were six days where the maximum wind was at least 20 miles per hour.  Five of those maximums occurred within the first eight days of March 2025.  The last day of the month saw a cold front cut into the area with storms after a taste of late spring early summer just two days before.

Temperature – March 2025

Saturday, March 29th was the first 80-degree day of the year with the high of 83 at GWC.  The lowest temperature of the month occurred on March 3rd with a morning low of 16.  There were 11 days where the low temperature for the day was below freezing with two of those days below 20 degrees.  Conversely, there were 12 days where the high temperature of the day was above 60.  

The average high for the month was 57 degrees while the average low was 34.  The average temperature for March 2025 was 45 degrees.   Looking at the diurnal temperature range, the average for the month was 23 degrees.

Pressure – March 2025

The average barometric pressure for the month was 29.87 inches of Hg, or 1012 millibars at GWC.  The lowest pressure was 29.24 inches or 990 millibars on March 6th while the highest was 30.14 inches or 1021 millibars on March 3rd.  The intense storm on March 4-5 resulted in a pressure fall of 0.90 of an inch or 30 millibars over the better part of three days.  

March 31st produced the first severe weather outbreak in the Garden State with a Tornado Warning issued for Southeastern Middlesex County and Northwestern Monmouth County as thunderstorms brought an abrupt end to the flirtation with summer.
