Summary
The midpoint of July 2025 was highlighted by the torrential rains of Monday, July 14th. Training thunderstorms with rainfall rates as high as almost 4 inches per hour dumped as much rain on Greg’s Weather Center in South Plainfield, NJ, as Hurricane Irene did back on August 27-28, 2011. The difference was that the rainfall occurred over a span of three and a half hours.
This week produced only three days with measurable rainfall, but also a copious average of 0.81 of an inch per day. In addition to the tropical-like rain, there were three more days with 90-degree weather at GWC. The total of 90-degree days for the year to date is now up to 14. The average high temperature for the week was a bit cooler than it has been at 86.4 degrees.
The torrential rains of July 14th produced devastating flash floods around Central Jersey from North Plainfield and Watchung in Somerset County to South Plainfield and Edison in Middlesex County, and Clark, Plainfield, Scotch Plains, and Westfield in Union County.
Another two people were lost to the floods. Consequently, the total dead from some form of severe weather so far this month in the Garden State increased to seven. It was the second severe storm in a little more than 10 days at GWC.
The barometer didn’t fluctuate much during the first three days of the week. However, there was a bit of a roller coaster during the last half of the week. Barometric pressure peaked at 30.08 inches on July 13th and bottomed out at 29.76 during the late afternoon of July 17th. Even during the storm of July 14th, the barometer didn’t fall too far to a low of 29.93 inches.
