Summary
The week of May 18th to May 24th, 2025 at Greg’s Weather Center in South Plainfield was mostly characterized by the nor’easter that developed at mid-week. The week was much similar to the week before with dry, pleasant weather over the first several days followed by storminess in the latter half. The Nor’easter was the first late May storm at GWC since the Memorial Day Weekend of 2021. It was the third May Nor’easter in Northwestern Middlesex County in the past five years.
The storm began on Wednesday, May 21st, and brought plenty of wind and waves along the coast with only a little rain. The nor’easter cranked up during the overnight from Wednesday to Thursday, May 22nd. The bulk of the storm’s rainfall occurred on Thursday with 0.86 of an inch falling at GWC. The Nor’easter brought a total of 1.17 inches of rain to South Plainfield. The May 2025 rainfall total now stands at 5.30 inches, which makes it the wettest month of the year to date.
Some on social media commented that if this Nor’easter took place during the winter, it would have brought significant snowfall. The clouds, rain, and instability for the last half of the week kept temperatures down. The average high for the week was just below 65° while the average low was below 50. The maximum high temperature for the week was only 74. Five of the days were below 70° including two that were below 56. The barometric pressures struggled to recover after last week’s storminess, which wasn’t helped by this week’s Nor’easter.
